I had to stop reading this book 22% of the way in even though I love Ireland and am fascinated by its history. First, it is full of mistakes. For example, the main character was in high school in 2007, but somehow was having a discussion with a political operative in the 1990s? And second, the writing is atrocious. Take this gem, one of many clumsily written sentences: “He always tried to touch her hand as she handed him his coat and gave her an oily smile.” And that's not even to mention the many typos and grammatical errors. Where's an editor when you need one? And finally, the author's injection of her political views was a huge turn off, a distraction from the story and utterly unnecessary. I may share some of her views, but her references to Israel and Palestine were out of left field, factually incorrect, and glaringly irrelevant. I cannot understand how this author could be popular, or how on earth anyone could find this mess "beautifully written." It's not!
